Air filtration and purification systems

What are air filtration and purification systems?

These are products designed to organize air exchange using mechanical ventilation in residential premises, offices, hotels, cafes, conference rooms and other premises where people are. You can often find the names: “Supply unit”, “Supply ventilation unit”; at Selton, we call them “Filter ventilation units”.

The principle of operation of filter ventilation units

Filter ventilation units provide cleaning and supply of clean air to the interior of the premises in which people are. Air cleaning can be carried out by two main types of cleaning: Mechanical filtration and Chemical filtration. Air supply after all stages of cleaning is carried out by powerful but quiet fans directly into the premises (through decorative panels and overlays on the body of the filter ventilation unit) or through special distribution devices.

The main function of any filter ventilation unit is to purify the air to ensure the safety of human life. This is achieved by filtering the air that the ventilation unit takes from the environment, first through a coarse air filter – the first stage, then, a fine air purification system – the second stage and, if necessary, the third stage – air purification from smoke, carbon monoxide and other harmful elements that can fly in the air. All this allows you to maintain an optimal microclimate in the room.

Let’s take a closer look at what needs to be cleaned from the air in today’s conditions:

Microbes, spores, viruses, dust, combustion products, car exhaust gases and various impurities and compounds that arise as a result of natural processes (this can manifest itself in an unpleasant odor in the air). If the filtration of dust, microbes, spores, viruses occurs by mechanical filters according to the principle of stepwise filtration (first a coarse filter, then fine filter, and finally ultrafine filter (HEPA filters)), then for cleaning from unpleasant odors, combustion products, exhaust gases and other chemical pollutants, a sorption method of air purification is used, which uses the ability of various substances to absorb organic and inorganic impurities from the air.

Filter ventilation units of our production can operate in 2 modes: room ventilation (supply ventilation) and filter ventilation (supply ventilation with protection against toxic substances, chemical impurities, radioactive elements and other pollutants).

To use the unit as a supply ventilation unit (for example, for an apartment), the following standards and calculations can be used:

For residential premises, one of the important values is the circulation rate, according to world standards, the average is 3 m3/h per square meter of area. In simple words, how many times should the air in the room change per hour.

That is, with an apartment area of 100 m2, it is necessary to ensure an air supply of at least 300 m3 per hour (Area X Air exchange rate = Required performance)

For using the unit in filter ventilation mode in a room used as a shelter (bomb shelter), other norms and standards are used, according to the norms it is necessary to ensure the supply of purified air at the rate of 10 m3/h per 1 person. That is, the filter ventilation unit for a civil defense shelter (or temporary shelter) must have a performance: Number of people in the shelter X 10 m3/h = Required performance.

For 10 people – at least 100 m3 hour
For 20 people – at least 200 m3 hour
For 30 people – at least 300 m3 hour
For 90 people – at least 900 m3 hour
For 180 people – at least 1800 m3 hour
