Generators are devices for autonomous power supply. They can run on gasoline or diesel fuel. For continuous operation, you need to provide cooling air, fuel material suitable for the device and lubrication for some parts of the generator. Both the filter for a diesel generator and the filter for a gasoline generator must protect the unit from dirt from the outside environment.

When you purchase a filter product, remember that it should be inspected regularly for breakage or contamination, cleaned or replaced. There are several varieties that perform different functions. Regardless of the task, the generator filter must be in good condition so that it does not harm the operation of the unit.

What are the filters for generators

Cleaning products can be divided into the following categories:

  • fuel filters;
  • oil filters;
  • air filters.

The fuel filter for the generator is designed to remove contaminants in both gasoline and diesel fuel. Oil filter – removes fouling. Air – removes mechanical contaminants. All types differ in size and type of filtration.

Fuel filters

When the generator is running, small particles may enter the mechanism and contaminate the unit and interfere with operation. This type of filter is needed to pre-clean the fuel before it enters the combustion system. Purchase is based on the modernity of the generator, its power and how often and smoothly it will be used. In the cold season, it is better to use with a heater.

Varieties may differ in the degree of filtration, design, the presence of an additional separator. There can be two filtering layers. One layer is needed to keep out large dirt particles, the second – the finer ones. Such a system can significantly extend the life of the device.

You can choose between a non-dismountable and a collapsible design. The collapsible design allows you to change the filtering elements. The separator helps to clean the accumulation of condensate, which should not get into the combustion chamber.

The degree of purification depends on the design itself and its manufacturer. The most effective degree is when both large particles and the smallest particles are trapped, but you have to replace the filter frequently. In this way it is possible to ensure constant operation under all conditions.

Oil filters

If you use diesel, you will need an oil filter for the generator. It cleans out soot and other contaminants. There is a screw-on design that has a valve that keeps contaminated oil out. The cartridge works on the same principle, but it needs to be changed periodically. In the instructions for use, you can read the shelf life of the cleaning product. It also depends on the oil used and how often the generator is used. For example, with synthetic oil, the life span is much longer than with mineral oil.

Air filters

The design consists of a body and two layers of filtration. The sponge element performs coarser filtration, while the paper part, impregnated with a solution for moisture resistance, removes fine dirt particles. Mostly made of cellulose.

Available in different shapes and sizes for air cleaners (cylindrical, panel, ring). There are variations with a special pre-cleaner. This type has an advantage over others because of the lower cost of electricity, but needs to be replaced or cleaned more often. The replacement must be done according to the instructions.

How do I know if my generator air filter needs to be cleaned?

Examine the spongy part for contaminants in the pores. The paper part will change its color from white to a dirtier shade, then the paper needs to be cleaned. If the color does not change after cleaning, then you need to replace it.

How to choose a quality filter for the generator

When buying, you should especially consider the material of manufacture. It must be strong enough to keep dirt and dust out, not deformed by external influences, and be able to withstand high temperatures well. The filter paper in the air filter must accumulate dirt until it completely loses pressure. Quality can be judged by the presence of corrugated folds. To increase the surface area, the paper is folded into an “accordion”. Thin paper, accordingly, forms more creases.

How to clean the filter

Filters for generators

You do not need any special skills to clean it yourself. On the air filter, unscrew the nut and carefully remove the elements. To clean the paper, you need to tap on the surface or blow under pressure, but under no circumstances use a brush – it will damage the liner. Sponge can be cleaned with a solution or kerosene, squeezing well, but not too much twisting. It can be soaked in oil. If there is mechanical damage, only replacement will help. After drying the parts, you need to put them back in place in their original order and secure them with a shroud. On the sponge element of the gasoline generator you need to open the cover, take out the filter element and rinse it well with gasoline. Do not use any other cleaning solutions. Lightly soak it in oil and put it back in place, close the cover tightly.

When cleaning the oil product, remove the parts after the alternator has cooled completely. Prepare a container in which to drain the excess oil. Rinse the filter to be removed thoroughly in fuel, dry it, and put it back in. T

he fuel filter should be cleaned with a non-flammable solvent and thoroughly dried. Remember to check for leaks after reinstallation.
